My Dad Left Money Under His Pillow After Asking About My Prescription Pills

My parents came to stay with us for the weekend. That evening, while looking for aspirin in the bathroom cabinet, my dad came across a bottle of prescription medication.
He walked into the kitchen holding it and asked, “What are these?” I nearly choked on my coffee. I explained what the medication was and quickly added, “Dad, you probably shouldn’t take anything that hasn’t been prescribed to you.
You should check with your doctor first.” He waved me off and asked, “How much does it cost?” I told him it was about ten dollars per pill. Dad thought about it for a moment before saying, “I still want one.
I’ll leave the money under my pillow before we go.” I assumed he was joking and changed the subject.
The next morning, after my parents had left, I went into the guest room to tidy up. When I lifted the pillow, I found cash tucked underneath it.
But instead of ten dollars, there was $110. Confused, I immediately called my dad. “Dad, I told you it was ten dollars for one pill. You left way too much money!” There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone.
Then he started laughing. “I know exactly how much it costs,” he replied. I stared at the money and asked, “Then why did you leave $110?”
Dad lowered his voice as though he were sharing a family secret. “The ten dollars was from me.” I waited for him to explain the remaining hundred dollars. Instead, he burst into even louder laughter.
“That was from your mother!” For a moment, I didn’t know whether to laugh, hang up, or pretend the entire conversation had never happened.
Apparently, Mom had been listening to everything because I suddenly heard her shouting in the background, “STOP TELLING HIM OUR BUSINESS!”
Dad continued laughing for another thirty seconds, clearly enjoying the situation far more than I was. I never asked either of them about it again.
After that weekend, I also decided it was best to keep prescription medications safely stored away, out of reach of curious visitors.
Some family moments are funny enough to become stories you tell for years, and others are best left unexplained.
In our family, the mysterious $110 under Dad’s pillow became one of those stories that nobody could forget.
