I discovered a vintage vanity on a local barter-and-trade site for just $50. I had been searching for the perfect piece for years, and the moment I saw it, I knew it had potential to become something I’d truly cherish. The frame was solid, but the veneer showed its age, worn from decades of use. My first step was to carefully remove the damaged surface and reveal the beauty beneath. Initially, I tried using heat to loosen the veneer, but soon realized patience was my greatest asset. Using a straight-edge razor and a few putty knives, I slowly peeled away the stubborn layers, piece by piece.

It was a meticulous process, but each section I removed felt like uncovering a story from the past. Once fully stripped, the vanity stood in its bare form, ready for renewal. Next came sanding, a task requiring hours of attention. Reaching every curve and crevice, I patiently smoothed the surface, revealing the natural character of the wood.

I selected a stain that enhanced the grain, bringing out a warm depth and subtle variation across the different wood types. While working on the mirror topper, I uncovered a small stamp reading “Galax Va., 1942,” a thrilling confirmation of the piece’s 80-year history.

For protection and shine, I applied four coats of premium satin polyurethane, resulting in a soft, elegant finish. The original handles were polished with Brasso, restoring their subtle gleam. After more than 100 hours of dedicated work, including a few challenges along the way, the transformation was complete. What had once been a worn and forgotten vanity is now a beautifully restored centerpiece, infused with care and ready for many more years of use.
