Longtime family friend Garrett Mitchell, known publicly as Cleetus McFarland, confirmed the tragedy in a social media post, explaining that the family had been en route to meet him at the time of the crash.
An eyewitness near the Statesville Regional Airport reported seeing the aircraft flying unusually low before it went down around 10:15 a.m. The plane reportedly caught fire upon impact.
