A Strange Sound Outside My Window Led to a Late-Night Discovery I Never Expected

Just after three in the morning, a strange scraping sound woke me from sleep. It seemed to be coming from directly outside my bedroom window. I lay still for a moment, hoping it was nothing more than a tree branch moving in the wind. But then I heard it again, followed by two quiet taps against the glass.

Since my husband had passed away two years earlier, I had been living alone. Every unusual noise made me more cautious, especially during the night. I reached for my phone, turned on the bedside lamp, and called the county police dispatcher.

After giving my name and address, I expected the dispatcher to send someone to check the property. Instead, he became unusually quiet.

“Ma’am, you contacted us about fifteen minutes ago,” he said.

I immediately told him there had been some mistake. I had only just picked up the phone. However, he explained that another caller had provided my full name and address and reported hearing someone near my bedroom window.

I felt confused. When he asked whether anyone else was inside the house, I told him I lived alone. He advised me to stay somewhere secure until officers arrived.

For several minutes, I remained in my bedroom, listening carefully. The scraping had stopped, but I could not stop thinking about the mysterious earlier call.

Eventually, I heard a police vehicle outside. Two officers approached the front porch and knocked on the door. I put on my robe, walked downstairs, and opened it.

The older officer asked whether I had contacted the department earlier. I explained again that I had not. He looked at his colleague before asking whether they could check the house. I agreed immediately.

They inspected the kitchen, living room, bathroom, spare bedroom, and upstairs hallway. They also checked the doors and windows. Everything appeared secure, and there were no obvious signs that anyone had entered the property.

One officer then explained that the first call had been received at 2:47 a.m. The caller had identified herself using my name and described unusual activity outside the same bedroom window. The conversation had ended before the dispatcher could ask further questions.

When the officers examined the area outside, they noticed several small footprints beneath the window. The marks continued toward the sidewalk, although they could not determine who had made them or when.

They photographed the area, recorded their observations, and told me they would include the incident in their report.

After they left, I checked the locks again and called my daughter, who lived several states away. I explained everything that had happened.

She listened without interrupting. Then she told me something unexpected.

Earlier that night, she had dreamed about our old family house. In the dream, she was standing in the side yard, looking toward my bedroom window. She said the dream had felt unusually realistic.

I asked what time she had awakened.

There was a brief silence.

“A little before three,” she answered.

I looked at the clock and remembered the mysterious police call recorded at 2:47.

My daughter insisted she had not contacted the police or anyone else about the house.

Neither of us could explain what had happened. The officers had found no evidence of an intruder, and the identity of the first caller remained unknown.

But one question continued to bother me long after that night:

Who had called the police using my name before I even picked up my phone?
